Lay of the Land

Multiple terrain topography & year round accessibility makes Eaton Canyon Nature Center a worthwhile destination for the outdoor trail-blazer.

The trail provides views of the Santa Monica & San Gabriel Mountains leading to a beautiful 40-ft waterfall.

Sergio Medina,

the trail-blazer.

Sergio is a manager at Run With Us, Pasadena.  Gaining insight from his experience as a high-mileage runner provided direction & basis for the final design.

Why Eaton Canyon?

Sergio runs high-mileage marathons with distances of 50+ miles.

He trains at Eaton Canyon for it’s compact distance ( 3.5 Mi ) which allows his body to relieve.

Speed

Repeating laps through the 3.5 mi distance, Sergio focuses on increasing speed.

Consistency

Sergio simulates Eaton Canyon's route to

the ultra-marathons he prepares for.

Inspiration taken from the bridge between Sergio’s high mileage marathon running to the cool down pace of Eaton Canyon’s compact distance.

Rigid structures provide a secure foot strike for Sergio while stying fluid through multiple terrains.

Prototyping + 3D

I worked closely with my instructor Roosevelt Brown to visualize a new footwear experience for Sergio, using innovative laser-cutting

techniques.

I brought my key sketch into Rhino3D to develop the tread pattern catering to Sergio's foot strike preference.
